Mannheim is a city in German that lies between the rivers
Neckar and Rhine. It’s the third biggest city in Germany’s Baden-Wurttemberg
state, and home to more than 313,000 residents. Its streets and avenues follow
a distinctive grid pattern that has earned it the nickname, “City of Squares”.
It boasts beautiful buildings and parks alongside factories
and industrial plants. Famous industrial giants in Mannheim include Daimler,
Jon Deere, Caterpillar, IBM, ABB and Unilever. The city is famous for wits
inventions like the automobile (first test-run in 1886), the world’s first
rocket plane (built by Julius Hatry), and the Lanz Bulldog (a popular tractor,
first introduced in 1921).
Mannheim is surrounded by a number of motorways which
connect it to the neighbouring cities Frankfurt, Karlsruhe and Saarbrucken. Its
main train station, Mannheim Hauptbahnhof, is an important railway junction,
and offers a high speed train links to various parts of the country. Trams and
buses are also available.
Visitors have a choice of two airports. Either Mannheim City
Airport, or Frankfurt International Airport, situated 40 miles north of Mannheim.
