All you need to know about Richmond, London

Situated in south-west London besides the River Thames, Richmond is an idyllic area with beautiful outdoor spaces and protected views of the river. Unlike other areas of London, Richmond features predominantly low rise buildings and a suburban and leisure focus, with ample historical architecture throughout its streets. The area is, however, popular with tech companies and media groups, which invest in the area’s relaxed pace and high quality of living for staff.

Transportation

Richmond station is connected to Kew Gardens, Stratford and Windsor via the District Line, London Overground and Waterloo to Reading Line. In addition, multiple London buses serve Richmond, meaning transport to virtually any other are of the city is easily accomplished. The A316 provides fast movement between the M3 and Chiswick, and the area is generally less congested than other parts of London.

Things to do

Perhaps the most famous of Richmond’s sights, Richmond Hill has inspired many great artists, including J.M.W. Turner, and remains a popular attraction for residents and tourists alike. At the top of the hill lies the entrance to Richmond Park which, with its natural nature reserve status and population of over 600 red and fallow deer, is a welcome retreat for many looking to escape the London sprawl. The area also offers entertainment in the form of a cinema and theatre, not to mention the countless bars and restaurants that can be found along its streets. Particularly popular are bars and eateries along the waterfront.

Sport and Leisure

There is plenty to do to keep fit in Richmond, with the Pools on the Park leisure centre offering indoor and outdoor pools for swimming enthusiasts. Richmond also has plenty of cycling paths, both on and off road, as well as along the Thames Towpath. Richmond Athletic Ground is home to rugby and football events, whereas water sports are especially popular, with row boat hire and a canoe club dominating the river.

Film Location favourite

Richmond is often used as a filming location, with Richmond Park proving to be especially popular. Scenes for Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows were filmed in the park, as were scenes from the Disney musical, Into the Woods. Richmond Theatre has been used as a backdrop to many major films, such as The Krays, Bedazzled, Bugsy Malone, The Hours and Finding Neverland. The village green area, with its Georgian architecture, is often used in period dramas. Several television shows have been filmed in the area, including Downton Abbey and Agatha Christie’s Poirot.
