Slovakia is located in central Europe and boarders countries including PolandUkraineAustria and the Czech Republic. The country has been an independent state since 1993 and is now a member of the United Nations and the European Union – which it joined in 2004.

Slovakia has a transformed, advanced, market economy meaning it is highly developed. Its GDP is estimated to be worth around $91.62 billion (2012). The service sector is the main contributor towards this figure at 61%, as well as employing 69% of the population. In recent years there has been a noticeable rise in foreign investment, mostly due to the countries low wages, low tax rate and educated labour force. Slovakia has a history of having one of the fastest growing economies in the European Union which is reflected by its 4% growth in 2010 and the fact its banking sector is nearly entirely privatised.

Slovakia is 40% forest which attracts many tourists, looking to view their natural landscapes. It's also home to mountainous areas with the most popular one being Tatra Mountains, which creates a natural border between Slovakia and Poland. Other tourist destinations include the country’s caves, medieval castles and ski resorts. An estimated 4.049 million tourists visited Slovakia in 2013.
