About Wollongong

Wollongong, located in the Illawarra region of New South Wales, Australia, is a seaside city. It sits on the thin coastal strip amid the Illawarra Escarpment and the Pacific Ocean, south of Sydney. It is the third largest city in terms of area in New South Wales and the ninth largest in Australia. The urban region is spread between Helensburg in the north to Gerroa in the south and is collectively governed by the councils of Wollongong, Shellharbour and Kiama.

Sometimes referred to as 'the Gong', Wollongong is an exciting destination for tourists, who are drawn to its various swimming and surfing beaches, botanic gardens and picturesque sites. Some of the attractions include Wollongong Botanic Gardens, a water park at Jamberoo called Jamberoo Action Park and Nan Tien Temple, one of the largest Buddhist temples in the southern hemisphere.

There is no clear origin of the name 'Wollongong', but many explanations have been put forward, one of them being that it means 'sound of the sea' in the local Aboriginal language. Other possible meanings include 'sound of the waves', 'great feast of fish', 'song of the sea', 'hard ground near water', 'five islands' and 'many snakes'.

Wollongong is served by the Illawarra Regional Airport, also known as the Wollongong Airport, located at Albion Park Rail, in Shellharbour City. The city is serviced by the South Coast railway line and the main roads include Waterfall-Yallah Southern Freeway, Northern Distributor and the Illawarra Highway.
