Wimbledon is situated in the London Borough of Merton. It is 7 miles southwest of Charing Cross.

It is internationally known as the home of the most prestigious tennis tournament in the world which take place during the end of Jun and beginning of July. The All England Croquet Club opened in 1870 but the name was then changes in 1922 to The All England Lawn and Croquet Club.

There has been a settlement in Wimbledon since the Iron Age when a hill fort was believed to have been constructed on Wimbledon Common.

Wimbledon was recorded in the Doomdsday Book as under the control of Mortlake Manor, during the subsequent centuries the land passed hands dozens of times, even ending up in the possession of Thomas Cromwell during the 16thcentury until 1871 when the local council became caretakers of Wimbledon Common and some of the surrounding land.

Wimbledon is also well known for its supply of Wombles which inhabit Wimbledon Common.
