About Wellington

Wellington is New Zealand’s capital city and its third most populous urban area. It lies on the south western tip of the country's North Island. European settlement of the area began in 1839 and the city became the capital city of New Zealand, replacing Auckland, in 1841.

Around 62,000 people work in Wellington’s central business district (CBD). The city’s cultural and nightlife venues are concentrated in the area around Courtenay Place, to the south of the CBD.

Although it has a compact city centre, Wellington has a thriving arts scene, nightlife and café culture and is an important centre of New Zealand’s film and theatre industries. Te Papa Tongarewa (the Museum of New Zealand), the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, the Royal New Zealand Ballet and the biennial New Zealand International Arts Festival are all based here.

Wellington is served by extensive bus and railway networks. Visitors can take ferries across Cook Strait to Picton in the South Island, as well as Eastbourne, Seatoun and Petone in the North Island. Wellington International Airport is 6 kilometres south east of the city. The majority of the serviced apartments Wellington has to offer are near transport links of some kind.
