Utrecht

Utrecht is the fourth largest city in the Netherlands. Its central location makes it an important business destination and the centre of the country’s transport network.

The region has been inhabited since the Stone Age but the city itself was founded in Roman times. Utrecht has been an important religious centre in the Netherlands for centuries and the city is dotted with churches which bear testament to this history. The most striking is the Dom Church, a former cathedral whose tower, the Dom Tower, is one of the city’s most famous landmarks. Other landmarks include the old inner city, which has largely retained its medieval character, from the moat that still circles it to the canal-side cellars and old churches.

There are many more modern attractions in the city too. The striking Rietveld Schroder House, built in 1924, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site thanks to its striking application of De Stijl artistic techniques to architecture. Utrecht has a thriving cultural scene and has several notable theatres, as well as a number of popular art galleries and museums.

The University of Utrecht is the largest in the Netherlands, giving the city a relatively young population and the most highly educated work force in the country. A large new development around Utrecht Centraal railway station will offer around 40,000 new jobs and house around 80,000 people.
