Shetland is a subarctic archipelago of Scotland, situated to
the Northeast of Britain. Otherwise known as the Shetland Islands, it’s located
50 miles from Orkney and 104 miles from mainland Scotland.
The archipelago is made up of some 300 islands and skerries,
many of which have been inhabited since the Mesolithic period.
Staying true to its early Norse and Scottish roots, Shetland
plays host to a number of traditional events and customs like the Up Helly Aa
festival and UnstFest.
Its local attractions range from things like the Shetland
Museum to the Hermaness National Nature Reserve. The archipelago is also home
to a number of ancient ruins including the Jarlshof Prehistoric and Norse
Settlement, Broch of Mousa and Muness Castle.
Shetland’s main sector is fishing, and reportedly makes the
local economy £300million a year. Its other key industries are agriculture,
aquaculture, renewable energy and petroleum.
