About Toulouse

Toulouse lies in southwestern France near the Pyrenees, half way between the Atlantic and the Mediterranean. This city on the Garonne river is on the site of an ancient Roman settlement and even today many of the smaller streets follow Roman lines. Many of the red brick buildings are of a pseudo-Roman style give Toulouse its nickname, La ville rose (The pink city).

Today Toulouse has become a center of aviation and spaceflight. More than 35,000 of the city's 400,000 citizens work in the civil aviation or space industries, with Airbus / EADS the largest employer in the region. The city has remained relatively unchanged however despite the economic boom.

Interesting sights can be enjoyed taking a walk through the city and along the Canal du Midi which opened in 1681 and is 240km long. The banks of the Garonne river from St Pierre bridge and Pont-neuf during the evening are popular with locals and tourists alike. For night life, St Pierre Place is very popular among Toulouse's students.

Regular scheduled domestic and international flights arrive at Blagnac airport, about 20 minutes from the city on the bus shuttle. It serves connections from Paris about every hour and there are many other flights to European cities.

The train station is almost in the heart of the city with services to Paris taking 6hours, Bordeaux 2:30 and Marseille 4hours.

One should avoid going to the city centre with a car, as parking space is seriously limited.
