About Tokyo

Tokyo is a vast and densely populated city with about 35 million people in the greater metropolitan area. Since 1900 it has been designed around its many suburban railways and subway lines, so public transport is the best way to get around.  After the fire bombings of 1945, Tokyo was completely rebuilt and was showcased to the world during the city's 1964 Olympic Games.

While the generally-accepted centre of Tokyo is the Imperial Palace, there are a number of major urban centres where business, shopping, and entertainment are concentrated around major train stations. These include:

Shinjuku - known for Tokyo's early skyscrapers, major department stores, electronics stores and hotels. On the east side of Shinjuku Station. Shinjuku Station moves an estimated three million passengers a day, making it the busiest station in the world.

Marunouchi and Otemachi - the main financial and business district of the city which contains the headquarters of many banks, trading companies and other major corporations.

Ginza and Yurakucho - the major shopping and entertainment district with department stores, upscale shops selling brand-name goods, and movie theaters.

Narita International Airport is about 60km east of the downtown core and trains to Tokyo Station take about an hour. Haneda Airport handles all domestic flights and is best reached by the Monorail.
