About Stockholm
Stockholm is the capital and the largest city of Sweden. It is home to the national Swedish government, the Riksdag (parliament) and the official residence of the Prime Minister as well as the Swedish monarch.
Founded around 1250, Stockholm is Sweden’s political, cultural, economic and media centre. The city is occasionally referred to as ‘Venice of the North’ and known for its architecture and its greenery. In 2010, the city was honoured with the European Green Capital Award by the European Union Commission and named Europe’s first green capital.
The majority of Stockholm residents work in the service sector, which accounts for three quarters of jobs in Stockholm. Its reputation as a green city owes in part to its lack of heavy industry. High technology companies which have their headquarters in Stockholm include Ericsson, IBM and Electrolux. Major Swedish banks such as Swedbank and Handelsbanken are also headquartered in Stockholm.
Stockholm's public transport system consists of the Stockholm Metro (Tunnelbana), two urban rail systems (Saltsjobanan and Roslagsbanan), three light rail systems (Tvarbanan, Lidingobanan and Nockebybanan), a tram system (Sparvag City), a large number of bus links and a city boat line. The two major international airports in Stockholm are the Stockholm-Arlanda Airport and the Stockholm Bromma Airport, the former being the largest and busiest in Sweden. The majority of the serviced apartments Stockholm has to offer are near transport links of some kind.
