St Helier

The port of Saint Helier on Jersey is named after a 6th century ascetic hermit who was martyred in AD 555. His July 16th feast day is marked by a pilgrimage to the Hermitage, an island in the bay which is accessible at low tide.

Saint Helier is the capital of the 118 sq.km island with a population of about 28,000 and is 10 miles from the airport. Liberation Square is focal point of the pedestrianised town centre and where the Jersey Tourism Office is located. Car ferries from St Helier link the island with Guernsey, England and France.

The Island is recognised as one of the world's leading offshore financial centres and financial services contribute approximately 60% of the Island's economy. In addition to tourism, Jersey is noted for its agricultural output, particularly potatoes and dairy produce. Farmers often sell surplus food and flowers in boxes by the roadside, relying on the honesty of those who pass to drop the correct change into the money box and take what they want.

Jersey issues its own Jersey banknotes and coins which circulate with UK coinage and Bank of England notes within the island.

With a temperate micro-climate, Jersey is the sunniest place in the British Isles.
