About Singapore
The island city of Singapore lies just 85 miles north of the Equator having a tropical rainforest climate with no distinct seasons. Temperatures range from 22°C to 34°C with high relative humidity of around 90% in the morning and 60% in the afternoon. Urbanisation has eliminated most of the primary rainforest, with the only remaining area being the Bukit Timah Nature Reserve.
Whilst well-diversified manufacturing still constitutes 28% of Singapore's GDP, it is a globally significant foreign exchange trading centre and container port. Singapore is a popular travel destination, with up to 10million tourists per annum. Orchard Road forms the shopping hub in Singapore, and the recently legalised gambling in the Integrated Resorts at Marina South and Sentosa is proving popular.
In the financial quarter of Raffles Place a wide variety of stunning skyscrapers have replaced almost all the traditional old buildings although there preserved blocks of buildings in Chinatown.
With a wide ethnic diversity, Singapore is very cosmopolitan and seen as a gateway between the East and West, but be aware that chewing gum and smoking are not permitted in public places.
