About Seoul

Set on the Han River, the Greater Seoul metropolitan area, has almost 23 million inhabitants making it the second biggest metropolitan area in the world after Greater Tokyo. Almost half of South Korea's population lives here.

Summers are generally hot and wet, with monsoons taking place from June until September. August, the hottest month, has an average temperature of 22°C to 30°C. Winters are often very cold when compared to places of a similar latitude, with an average January temperature of -7°C to 1°C, and are generally a lot drier than summers, although on average there are 28 days of snow in Seoul each year.

The heart of Seoul is the old Joseon Dynasty city, which is now the downtown area. The World Trade Center is located in Gangnam-gu and is where major expositions and conferences are held. Also in Gangnam-gu is the COEX Mall, a large indoor shopping and entertainment complex. The Olympic Stadium and Park is in Songpa-gu, on the south side of the Han River, upstream from Gangnam-gu.

Incheon International Airport on Yeongjong island is now responsible for almost all international flights and some domestic flights, while Gimpo Airport serves domestic flights only.

Taxis will mostly be white, but there are more expensive special black taxis. These deluxe cabs, unlike normal taxis which only take cash, usually carry mobile credit-card terminals. Most taxi drivers at the airport can speak some English, but rarely fluently and will be difficult to understand. It is recommended to have your destination written down on a piece of paper before entering a taxi and the passenger will usually pay for road tolls in addition to the taxi fare. Tips are not necessary.
