About Pretoria
Affectionately known as the Jacaranda City for all the purple blossom-bedecked trees which line its thoroughfares in summer, Pretoria is an elegant, quiet city that's a perfect contrast with its more frenetic neighbour, Johannesburg, which is just half an hour away. Pretoria has a long, involved and fascinating history - first as the capital of the independent Boer republic of the Transvaal, then as one of the three capitals of South Africa. Located in the northern part of the Gauteng Province, Pretoria serves as the administrative and national capital of South Africa.
The city is located in a summer rainfall area with hot days regularly followed by short and intense afternoon thunderstorms. The thunderstorms are often accompanied by lightning and occasionally result in hail. Summer temperatures range between 16°C at night to 30°C during the day. Winters are mild and dry with temperatures averaging between a minimum of 5°C and a maximum of 20°C.
Pretoria offers plenty to see and do including the Transvaal Museum which boasts excellent natural history displays and is the home of Mrs Ples, the australopithecine fossil found at Sterkfontein in the Cradle of Humankind. Artefacts from the Iron Age state of Mapungubwe are exhibited at the Mapungubwe Museum at the University of Pretoria including the famous golden rhino, golden sceptre, golden bowl and various gold, ivory and copper ornaments, trade beads and Chinese ceramics are on display as well.
Also worth visiting are the Cultural History Museum, the Smuts Museum which is located just outside Pretoria, the Voortrekker Monument and Menlyn Park, the largest shopping centre in Pretoria. Within the city are quite a few open spaces where you can walk or mountain bike. Nearby is the Premier Game Reserve, which has a number of white rhino and eland, or you can skydive at the Pretoria Skydiving Club, the largest in the country.
