Groningen is a major municipality in the Netherlands, home to great museums, fabulous nightlife spots and cool historic sites. Officially the biggest city north of the Netherlands, it has a population of over 210,000, many of whom are students.

Groningen’s beginnings are difficult to trace back. Many recognise the city as being founded 1040, however, sources show there may have been activity in Groningen there as early as 3950BC. Originally a trade centre, Groningen has since blossomed into a thriving university city, with the opening of Groningen University in 1614.

Local attractions include Groningen Museum, Prinsenhof Gardens, and the brewery, Brouwerij Martinus. Also on offer are the landmarks Martinitoren and Korenbeurs.

Like many Dutch cities, Groningen is popular for its cycling and has a comprehensive network of bike paths. There are a total of three train stations in the city, which offer fast services to places like Rotterdam and Amsterdam. Those wishing to catch a bus have a choice of regional buses and city buses, which follow various routes to and from the city.
