About Munich
Munich is Germany's third largest city with a population of about 1.3million. It lies on the River Isar, 50km north of the Bavarian Alps. The range of temperature between day and night or summer and winter can be extreme. The coldest month is January with an average temperature of -2°C and snow cover is seen for at least a couple of weeks during winter. Summers in Munich city are fairly warm with average temperature of 19°C and there is frequent rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms.
After 1945, Munich was completely rebuilt following a meticulous and - by comparison to other war-ravaged German cities - rather conservative plan which preserved its pre-war street grid. At the center of the city is the Marienplatz with a Marian column at its centre. The New Town Hall tower contains the Rathaus-Glockenspiel, an ornate clock with almost life-sized moving figures that show scenes from a medieval jousting tournament as well as a performance every 15 minutes.
Munich features a wide and diverse array of modern architecture, although strict height limitations for buildings have limited the construction of skyscrapers. Most high-rise buildings are clustered at the northern edge of Munich next to the Olympic Park. Several other high-rise buildings are located near the city center and on the Siemens campus in southern Munich.
The Hofbrauhaus am Platzl is arguably the most well-known beer hall, located in the city center. It also operates a large tent at the 2-week-long Oktoberfest, perhaps Munich's most famous attraction.
Franz Josef Strauss International Airport is 30 km to the north east Munich. It can be reached by city's suburban train lines but from the Hauptbahnhof (main railway station), the journey takes 40-45 minutes. The majority of the serviced apartments Munich has to offer are near transport links of some kind.
