About Manila

The City of Manila is the capital of the Philippines and is located on the eastern shore of Manila Bay on Luzon, the country's largest island. Manila is the hub of a thriving metropolitan area and home to over 10 million people. It lies at the mouth of the Pasig River which bisects the city. The layout of the city was haphazardly planned during Spanish Era as a set of communities surrounding the original Spanish Era walled city of Manila, called Intramuros. Intramuros is one of the oldest walled cities in the far east. During the American Period, some semblance of city planning was done on the portions of the city south of the Pasig River.

The city is divided into 16 districts, with Ermita and Malate well-known and popular amongst tourists, having many bars, restaurants, and shopping malls. The districts of San Miguel and Pandacan host the official residence of the President of the country, the Malacanang Palace.

Directly south of Intramuros lies Rizal Park, the country's most significant park. In it you will find the Chinese and Japanese Gardens, the Department of Tourism, the National Museum of the Philippines, The National Library of the Philippines, the Planetarium, the Orchidarium and Butterfly Pavilion, an open-air auditorium for cultural performances, a light and sound presentation and lots of other fun things to do.

Ninoy Aquino International Airport is the primary airport serving Manila and the main international gateway to the Philippines. Located along the border between Pasay City and Parañaque City, it is about 7km south of Manila.
