In the Fylde district of Lancashire, looking out onto the Irish Sea, Lytham St Annes is a popular seaside resort. It comprises the towns of Lytham and St Annes-on-the-Sea, which grew to become a conurbation along with the district of Fairhaven and the village of Ansdell. Historians have dated original settlements in the area back to the Bronze Age, but Lytham was first officially recorded in the Domesday Book, while St Annes was planned and constructed in the 19th century.
Lytham originally grew up around the fishing industry; however, in the 18th and 19th centuries, when health resorts became fashionable, it prospered as a spa town. Today the conurbation is a popular place of residence for employees at BAE Systems in nearby Warton, and professionals working in Blackpool and Preston.
Lytham St Annes is well-known for its selection of golf courses including the Royal Lytham & St Anne’s Golf Club, which has been used for important championships such as the British Open, the Ryder Cup and the Dunlop Cup. There are several other sites of interest for visitors, such as Lytham Windmill, Lytham Hall, the LSA Spitfire on Fairhaven Lake and St Annes Pier. In addition, Blackpool is fewer than 6 miles north and is perfect for those who want a livelier day out.
Three railway stations provide easy access between the four neighbourhoods of Lytham St Annes; however, each separate area is compact in size and is therefore easily navigable on foot.
