About Victoria
Victoria refers to an informal area that lies within the City of Westminster. So-called because of London Victoria train station, the area is vaguely defined by the streets around the station including Victoria Street, the northern section of Buckingham Palace Rd, Wilton Rd, Grosvenor Gardens, Bressenden Place and Eccleston Street.
Victoria station is a London Underground and National Rail station and the closest to the Queen at Buckingham Palace but which she'll rarely use as her first choice of transportation. Victoria is also close to Green Park, St James's Park, Hyde Park Corner and the popular districts of Mayfair and Chelsea.
Just west of Victoria is Westminster, the seat of England's parliament for almost a thousand years. Across the River Thames, in Vauxhall and Lambeth, are Whitehall and London City Council.
Victoria Street runs on a east-west axis from the station to Broad Sanctuary at Westminster Abbey along which are restaurants, banks, retailers, a Marks and Spencer and a House of Fraser. At the end of Broad Sanctuary is the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform, the headquarters of Transport for London and New Scotland Yard, the headquarters of the Metropolitan Police.
