About Trafalgar Square
Trafalgar Square commemorates the Battle of Trafalgar (1805), a British naval victory of the Napoleonic Wars. In the 1820s the Prince Regent engaged the landscape architect John Nash to redevelop the area. Nash cleared the square as part of his Charing Cross improvement scheme.
At a Christmas ceremony that has been held every year since 1947, a Norway Spruce is given by Norway and presented as London's Christmas tree, as a token of gratitude for Britain's support during World War II.
Nelson's Column is in the centre of the square, surrounded by fountains designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens in 1939 and four huge bronze lions by Sir Edwin Landseer. The column is topped by a statue of Lord Nelson, the admiral who commanded the British Fleet at Trafalgar.
The National Portrait Gallery dominates the north side of the square and this national icon is a gathering point for celebrations and political demonstrations alike.
The nearest underground stations include Charing Cross (Northern, Bakerloo lines), which has an exit in the square, Embankment (District, Circle lines) and Leicester Square (Northern, Piccadilly lines). The majority of the serviced apartments Trafalgar Square has to offer are near transport links of some kind.
