About Stepney

Stepney is a district in the borough of Tower Hamlets in London’s East End. The area was originally a medieval village around St Dunstan’s church but developed rapidly in the 19th century as immigrant workers and displaced poor London residents moved to the area. A third of the housing in the area was destroyed during the Blitz then in the 1960s most residential streets were replaced with tower blocks and modern housing estates.

Although Stepney has not undergone the same kind of gentrification that has affected other areas of east London, the area has benefited from the development of the Docklands Light Railway and from its proximity to Whitechapel and beyond that, the City.

Stepney has been home to waves of immigrants throughout its history, from the Huguenots and Irish to Jews and more recently the Bangladeshi community. The area still bears the influence of these immigrant communities, particularly the Bangladeshis.

In the northern part of Stepney, the nearest underground stations are Mile End, Stepney Green and Whitechapel. The southern part of the district is served by Limehouse station on the Docklands Light Railway. The majority of the serviced apartments Stepney has to offer are near transport links of some kind.
