About Shoreditch

Modern day Shoreditch is one of London’s most fashionable areas, attracting creative types such as musicians and artists. But Shoreditch has undergone many transformations over the years between its creation as a medieval parish to its current incarnation as one of London’s hippest locations.

Medieval Shoreditch developed over Tudor times to become a cultural hotspot with two theatres, which attracted celebrated playwrights including William Shakespeare. Many of his early plays were performed in Shoreditch.  In the following centuries the area became home to even more theatres, as well as music halls, and rivalled the West End as a cultural destination.

From the 17th century to the early 19th century, Shoreditch was a centre for the textile and furniture industries, but both of these fell into decline in the late 1800s. The area became famed for crime, prostitution and poverty; then, it was devastated by Blitz and insensitively developed after the war.

Since the mid-1990s, however, the area’s low property prices and proximity to central London have attracted creative professionals; this has led to improved facilities, widespread gentrification and increased property prices.

Recently, the area has become popular with London-based web technology companies, several of whom have head offices around Old Street roundabout - including Last.fm, Dopplr and Songkick. Accordingly, David Cameron described the area as a ‘Silicon Roundabout’ – and a centre for internet creativity - in a speech in November 2010.

Shoreditch High Street station is now on the East London branch of the London Overground, providing improved connections between Shoreditch and the rest of London. The majority of the serviced apartments Shoreditch has to offer are near transport links of some kind.
