About Pimlico
Pimlico is located within the City of Westminster. The area is surrounded by Belgravia to the north and the River Thames to the south, Grosvenor Canal to the west and Vauxhall on its eastern border.
Pimlico has a long history and passed hands several times during the 15th-18thCentury. It is believed to be named after one of its residents, Ben Pimlico, who was famous for his ‘nut brown ale’. The Pimlico that we know now, the grid design, was created by Thomas Cubitt in 1825. The Blitz destroyed some of the original architecture and a large part of the south-west corner was rebuilt as houses and named Churchill Gardens.
Pimlico is situated close to the Houses of Parliament and because of this and the fact that it has always been an affluent and fashionable neighbourhood has meant that it has been home to many members of parliament. These have included Sir Winston Churchill, Oswald Mosley and William Hague.
Other notable residents have included Bram Stoker, Laura Ashley and Laurence Olivier.
Pimlico tube station on the Victoria line. The nearest railway station is Victoria with access to the entire south coast.
