About Liverpool Street
Liverpool Street is most well known for its railway station, Liverpool Street station. Liverpool Street, although just a street and a railway station, is so well known that people often refer to it as an area in itself. Liverpool Street is a central London railway terminus and connected to the London Underground. It is the end of two main lines: the Great Eastern Main Line to Norwich and the West Anglia Main Line to Cambridge. Liverpool Street station also provides local commuter services to parts of east London and Essex. In addition to this, it is the terminus of the Stansted Express, a fast train link to London Stansted Airport. The majority of the serviced apartments Liverpool Street has to offer are near transport links of some kind.
Liverpool Street station is the third busiest station in the United Kingdom after Waterloo and Victoria and has over 120 million visitors each year. The station has exits to Bishopsgate, Liverpool Street and the Broadgate development. The station connects the Central line, Circle line, Metropolitan line, and Hammersmith & City line, and is located in travelcard zone 1.
The station was built on the site of the original Bethlem Royal Hospital, was opened to traffic on 2 February 1874 by the Great Eastern Railway and was completely operational from 1 November 1875. It was designed by the Great Eastern Railway’s chief engineer, Edward Wilson, and was built by John Mowlem & Co. The station was named after the street on which it stands, which in turn was named in honour of British Prime Minister Lord Liverpool.
