About Greenwich

Greenwich is a historic town on the south bank of the River Thames, now part of south east London in the borough of Greenwich. It is best known for its maritime history and as the birthplace of Greenwich Mean Time.

Greenwich has a long history. The town sits on a large flood plain with a higher area to the south and provided ideal conditions for early settlement: historians know that the area has been settled since Roman times and it could have been inhabited even earlier.

In the 10th century the area was occupied by the Danes; in 1414, a royal palace was built there by Duke Humphrey of Gloucester which would become the favourite home of the Tudor monarchs, the birthplace of Henry VIII and Elizabeth I. During the English Civil War, the palace was used as a biscuit factory and prisoner of war camp.

In 1676, Greenwich became the site of the Royal Observatory, designed by Sir Christopher Wren. The town was the world leader in maritime and scientific traditions for many years, leading to the Greenwich Meridian and Greenwich Mean Time being adopted as world standards.

The town is now a UNESCO world heritage site. Visitors flock to the town to visit the National Maritime Museum, the Royal Observatory and the Cutty Sark, a 19th century clipper ship preserved in a dry dock.

Greenwich has excellent public transport links including the Docklands Light Railway (DLR), underground and mainline train stations and regular commuter Thames Clipper services from Greenwich Pier to Canary Wharf, the City of London and the West End of London. The majority of serviced apartments in Greenwich are near transport links of some kind.
