About the City
The City of London is a small area within Greater London. It is often referred to as the City (written on maps as “City”) or the Square Mile, as it is just over one square mile in area. The City is the hub of the United Kingdom’s financial industry, ranking on a par with New York City as a leading centre of global finance. Thoughout the 19th Century, the City served as the world’s primary business centre, and continues to be a major meeting point for businesses today.
In the medieval period, the City was the full extent of London. However the term ‘London’ now refers to a much larger area and the City is now just a small area within greater London.
The City has a resident population of approximately 8,000, but an average of 320,000 people work there, primarily in the financial sector. Consequently the area has abundant transport links with eight tube lines, three overland train stations and the DLR providing routes into the City from all over corners of London and the surrounding area.
