About Camden

Camden is famous throughout the UK as a lively alternative destination, bustling with markets, cafes, bars and music venues. The area is also famed for its creativity, and in the past has attracted residents from all avenues of cultural life, such as singer Morrissey and writer Beryl Bainbridge.

Camden Town is an area within the larger borough of Camden. The area has been inhabited for centuries, and was the site of two highways leading from the Roman city of Londinium, one of which led west and another of which led to St Albans. The Domesday Survey of 1086 recorded the areas of St Pancras, Hampstead, Holborn and Tothele (Tottenham Court) were recorded as small hamlets where the inhabitants ploughed the land and kept pigs in the forests.

Camden Town itself was named after Charles Pratt, the first Earl of Camden. It began as little more than a handful of buildings beside a main road, but when Regent’s Canal was opened to traffic in 1820 this changed the area considerably.

By the end of the 19th century, Camden Town had grown significantly and a significant number of locals found employment working on or around the canal. In the 1960s, new housing developments and schemes were introduced, bringing new inhabitants into the area. Then, in the 1970s, the conversion of Camden Lock’s wharves and warehouses on the Regent’s Canal into craft markets helped shape the tourist attraction that Camden is today.

The borough of Camden has excellent transport facilities, from Euston and King’s Cross St Pancras railway stations to numerous underground stations. In Camden Town itself are Camden Town underground station and Camden Road overground station. The majority of the serviced apartments Camden has to offer are near transport links of some kind.
