About Borough
Borough, popularly known as Southwark today, is a district in London, England, UK. It is one of the oldest parts of central London. Historically it was historically part of an ancient borough in the county of Surrey and was made up of a number of parishes which eventually came under the authority and influence of the City of London.
It experienced a rapid depopulation during the 19th century and now is at the early stages of regeneration. Deteriorating light industry and factories opened doors for residential development, restaurants, shops, bars and galleries.
The area is within easy walking distance of the City and the West End. It has become a major business centre in recent years with international corporations, professional practices and publishers establishing their offices in the area. The skyscraper, Shard, is under construction near London Bridge station. When completed in 2012, it will be the tallest building in the European Union and will house residential apartments, restaurants, a hotel, a spa and offices.
Borough High Street and Southwark Street are two important streets in the area. The famous Borough Market was once held on Borough High Street and has been moved to the west with its main entrance on Southwark Street. Borough Market is one of the largest food markets in London. It has become a fashionable place to buy food and has been used as a film set on films including Bridget Jones's Diary (2001), Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels (1998) and Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004).
The majority of the serviced apartments Borough has to offer are near transport links of some kind.
