About Bermondsey
Bermondsey is an area in London on the south bank of the River Thames and is part of the London Borough of Southwark.
The area has a long history and was mentioned in a letter written by Pope Constantine in the early 8th century. A church in the area is mentioned in the Domesday Book, which was probably the nascent Bermondsey Abbey.
Centuries later, after the Great Fire of London Bermondsey was rebuilt and began to attract wealthier residents, becoming a spa leisure resort in the 18th century. However, by the mid-19th century the arrival of industrial plants, docks and immigrant housing led to the development of slums along the riverside. The area also suffered from extensive bombing during the Blitz.
In the late 20th century, many of the wharves were redeveloped into a mixture of residential and commercial accommodation and Bermondsey is now home to some of the most upmarket and expensive properties in London. In 2000, Bermondsey underground station opened on the Jubilee line, making the area even more convenient for those working in central London. The majority of the serviced apartments Bermondsey has to offer are near transport links of some kind.
