About Barbican

Barbican is located to the east of central London. The area was developed in the 1960s after the land was flattened during World War Two. It now consists of 13 residential blocks of flats which house around 4,000 people. The three biggest of these are named after William Shakespeare, Oliver Cromwell and the Earl of Lauderdale. Nearly all of the buildings in the estate were Grade 2 listed in 2001 because of their architectural significance.

The area is perhaps best known for the Barbican Centre, Europe’s largest centre for performing arts. It is the home of London Symphony Orchestra and also includes a theatre, cinema and art gallery.

The Museum of London is situated within the Barbican estate. Documenting London through the ages, it is a popular tourist attraction.
