About Lille

Lille is a medium-sized city northern France close to the Begian border with a very large student population. This city has a strong industrial background, but, after some difficult years, it is now known throughout France for its handsome city center and its very active cultural life. Lille lies on the Brussels-Paris-London rail connection with TGV and Eurostar trains stopping here. The trip to Brussels takes 40 minutes, to Paris about an hour, and London is 100 minutes away.

Lille has several distinct districts. Vieux Lille is full of old charming houses, and this historic district has experienced rebirth in recent decades. Its cobble-stone streets host a variety of stylish designer shops, gourmet restaurants, and the modern Cathedrale Notre Dame. The Vauban is the student district with some interesting mansions, and the Centre Ville is known for its calm streets and interesting museums. The Wazemmes district is increasingly 'bobo' (Bourgeois Bohemian) with a thriving artistic life, and is known throughout the region for its outdoor market. The March de Wazemmes is open on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sunday mornings, with vendors who sell everything from fresh fruits and vegetables, books and stationery, suitcases and shoes, even perfume and undergarments! After shopping, relax with a glass of beer at one of many little pubs surrounding the market.

Euralille is Lille's largest shopping center and offers popular clothing chains, as well as the Carrefour hypermarket. It is situated between the two train stations, Gare Lille Flandres and Gare Lille Europe, right in the heart of the city.

The Lille Metro's VAL system is a driverless system. Line 2 is 32km long with 43 stations and was the first automatic metro line in the world, opening in 1983.
