About Larnaca
Larnaca is the third largest city in Cyprus and lies on the southern coast of the island after Nicosia and Limassol. It is the second largest commercial port on the island and an important tourist attraction. Cyprus’s largest airport, Larnaca International Airport, is located on the outskirts of the city.
Larnaca is renowned for its beautiful seashore, lined with rows of palm trees.
The city was founded by Greeks in the 14th century BC and was originally known as Kition. The biblical name for Larnaca, 'Kittim', was in fact used to refer to Cyprus as a whole and occasionally to refer to Greeks and Romans. Colloquially Larnaca is known as ‘Skala’, which means ‘landing stage’ or 'ladder’, referring to the city’s status in history as a significant port.
One of Larnaca's interesting landmarks is the Marble Bust of Zeno. It stands at a crossroads near the American Academy. Zeno was born in 334 BC in Kition (ancient Larnaca) and founded the famous Stoic school of philosophy in Athens. Stoicism emphasised on goodness and peace of mind gained from living a life of virtue in accordance with nature.
Due to the closure of Nicosia International Airport, Larnaca’s air and sea port have played an increasingly important role in the economy of the island. The tourism industry in Larnaca employs three quarters of its labour force: many tour and travel agencies and holiday package agencies have their head offices at Larnaca, including the head office of Eurocypria Airlines. The majority of the serviced apartments Larnaca has to offer are near transport links of some kind.
