About Hull

Hull (official name: Kingston-upon-Hull) is a city in the East Riding of Yorkshire with a population of around 250,000. It sits on the intersection of the River Hull and River Humber and has been an important port since the Middle Ages, exporting local produce and importing raw materials from the Baltic countries. After 700 years, the city’s port is still a major importer of timber from northern Europe.

Fishing is one of Hull’s traditional industries and in the 19th century fishermen migrated to the area from as far afield as Devon and Kent. The industry declined in the 1970s after disputes with Iceland over the fish-rich part of the North Sea which had previously provided much of Hull’s plentiful supply. However, many industries that developed through the port's trade of raw materials remain in the city, such as pharmaceutical firm Reckitt Benckiser and millers Maizecor.

Hull has undergone extensive regeneration work in recent years. On the city’s waterfront, a new development called Humber Quays is developing into an exclusive business address, boasting companies from PricewaterhouseCoopers to Barclays Commercial. The city is now home to the BBC’s Yorkshire and Lincolnshire headquarters and is an important regional shopping destination, with three major shopping centres and numerous chain and department stores.

Famous residents of the city include the poets Andrew Marvell and Philip Larkin and the politician and anti-slavery campaigner William Wilberforce.
