About Huddersfield
Huddersfield is a large market town in West Yorkshire, around 10 miles (16.6 km) south of Bradford, the nearest city. The town first entered recorded history in Roman times, but Huddersfield as it exists today took shape during the Industrial Revolution.
Situated close to both the South Pennines and the Peak District, the town is surrounded by striking countryside and is a popular destination for walkers and cyclists.
Huddersfield has been involved in the woollen industry for centuries and became a centre for the textile industry during the 18th and 19th centuries. The wealth this created led to the building of the numerous Victorian buildings which remain in the city today, the most famous of which are the railway station and the town hall.
Another of Huddersfield’s main attractions is Castle Hill, which has been occupied since the Stone Age. The Victoria Tower, added to commemorate the 60th anniversary of Queen Victoria’s coronation in 1898, provides panoramic views over the town and surrounding countryside.
The town has a number of museums and art galleries. Colne Valley Museum focuses on local working life in the mid 1880s, while Tolson Memorial Museum spans a wider time frame, with collections around the area's earliest settlers alongside modern artifacts. Meanwhile, Huddersfield Art Gallery showcases British and international art from the last 100 years.
Huddersfield has a number of small, independent shops and numerous national chain stores, many based in Byram Arcade, Queensgate Market Hall or Brook Street Outdoor Market. Its main train station has express services to Liverpool and Manchester, as well as to numerous other northern cities such as Newcastle, York and Leeds.
