About Grenoble
Grenoble in south-east France is situated at the foot of the Alps at the confluence of the Drac and Isre rivers. It has a population of 160,000 and is surrounded by mountains with over 20 ski resorts nearby, even though the city centre is only 215m above sea level.
Grenoble may be accessed by plane from Lyon airport 1 hour away, or Geneva Cointrin International Airport 90 minutes away. It is 3 hours by train on the TGV from Paris Gare de Lyon. Within Grenoble there is a comprehensive bus and tram service with 26 bus lines and 3 tram lines, serving all of greater Grenoble. The city center is famous for its complex one way system which is frequently grid-locked. The motorway system into the city is particularly poorly designed, often leading to tailbacks miles long.
The Bastille is an ancient series of fortifications on the mountainside 300m above Grenoble, and is visible from all over the city. Although begun in the Middle Ages, later years saw extensive additions including a semi-underground defense network. The Bastille has been credited as the most extensive example of 19th century fortifications in all of France, and held an important strategic point on the Alpine frontier. This popular tourist attraction is reached by cable gondolas that provide riders with an excellent view over the Isre River.
For shopping, stop at the Victor Hugo tr amway station (tramway A or B) next to the Grenette place in the center of the town. This place and all streets around are pedestrianised and you will enjoy small streets with lot of people in shops and restaurants.
