About Frankfurt
Situated on the Main River in the middle of Germany, Frankfurt is a major financial and transportation centre. Frankfurt is the seat of the European Central Bank and the Frankfurt Stock Exchange and is the wealthiest city in the European Union.
Frankfurt International Airport is 12km from the city centre and operates direct flights to more destinations (265) than Heathrow. For regional services, an underground station provides frequent S-Bahn trains to Frankfurt central station. Trains take 12 minutes to reach Frankfurt's city centre and depart roughly every 15 minutes. Deutsche Bahn operates the AiRail Service with express trains to all parts of Germany from the long-distance railway station adjacent to Terminal 1.
During World War II Frankfurt was heavily bombed and its medieval city centre was largely destroyed. The city recovered relatively quickly after the war, and its modern shape with many tall skyscrapers in the city centre was built around the surviving old buildings, such as Saint Bartholomeus' Cathedral and the Old Opera House. Part of the rebuilding process involved creating one of Europe's most efficient underground transportation systems in the 1970s.
Many cultural and educational buildings lie along the Main riverbanks, and a major festival in the city is the "Museumsuferfest"; "Museum-Riverbank-Festival". It offers the opportunity to see, buy, smell, taste and hear new things from all around the world. The festival takes place yearly at the end of summer and attracts an average of 3 million visitors. The festival goes over a period of 3 days and ends with a spectacular show of fireworks. Frankfurt is also known for having one of the largest red light districts in Germany in vicinity of the Hauptbahnhof (main railway station).
