About Denver

Denver in the state of Colorado is located in the South Platte River Valley on the High Plains just east of the southern Rocky Mountains. The Denver downtown district is approximately 15 miles (24km) east of the Rockie's foothills and is nicknamed "The Mile-High City" because its official elevation is exactly one mile (5,280 feet or 1,609m) above sea level.

Denver has a semi-arid climate with four distinct seasons, but the day-to-day weather is heavily influenced by the proximity of the Rocky Mountains to the west. Denver's winters can vary from mild to cold, with snow falls from October to April. Large amounts of snow fall on the mountain ski resorts just west of the city. Starting in mid-July, the monsoon brings tropical moisture into the city and with it come frequent short (and occasionally severe) late-afternoon thunderstorms. However, despite this tropical moisture, humidity levels during the day generally remain very low. The average high during the summer is 29°C and the average low is 13°C.

Denver is a very green city with over 200 parks of various sizes and it's economy is based partially on its geographic position and its connection to some of the major transportation systems of the country. Because Denver is the largest city within 600 miles, it has become a natural location for storage and distribution of goods and services to the Mountain States.

Denver is home to many nationally recognized museums, including a new wing for the Denver Art Museum by world-renowned architect Daniel Libeskind, and bustling neighborhoods such as LoDo, filled with art galleries, restaurants, bars and clubs.

The very large Denver International Airport is north east of the city. A frequent airport express bus service called skyRide operates between DIA and various locations throughout the Denver-Aurora and Boulder metropolitan areas. The skyRide services operate on comfortable coaches with ample space for luggage.
