About Dallas
Dallas, Texas was founded in 1841 and formally incorporated as a city on 2 February 1856. The city is known for its role in the petroleum industry, telecommunications, computer technology, banking, and transportation. Dallas's prominence comes from its historical importance as a center for the oil and cotton industries and its position along numerous railroad lines.
Dallas has a humid subtropical climate with Spring and Fall bringing very pleasant weather to the area and are usually the best times to visit. In the spring months, residents and visitors appreciate the beauty of the vibrant wildflowers.
Most of the notable commercial architecture in downtown Dallas is modernist and postmodernist. Iconic examples of modernist architecture within this freeway loop include I. M. Pei's Fountain Place. Nearby is the West End Historic District with rejuvenated shops and restaurants.
One architectural "hotbed" in the city is a stretch of homes along Swiss Avenue, which exhibits many styles and tastes in architecture.
Downtown is the center of Dallas Area Rapid Transit's (DART) light rail system. The Blue and Red lines run through, from south to north, Convention Center Station, Union Station, West End Station, Akard Station, St. Paul Station, and Pearl Station. The Trinity Railway Express commuter train, which connects downtown Fort Worth with downtown Dallas, terminates at Union Station. Union Station also has Amtrak service.
