About Chicago

Chicago is located along the southwestern shore of Lake Michigan and is a major centre of transportation, industry, politics, culture, finance, medicine and higher education. Chicago is informally called the "Windy City," but also has the nickname "Second City" which refers to the fact that the first Chicago burnt down in the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, and the "Second City" is the one built upon those ashes.

The city is the birthplace of the skyscraper with many examples of the worlds oldest and finest proundly defining the downtown skyline. This is traditionally inside 'The Loop', which applies to the section of the city surrounded by the circuit formed by Chicago's famous 'L' trains where 'L' stands for elevated. The circuit runs along Lake Street on the north, Wabash Avenue on the east, Van Buren Street on the south, and Wells Street on the west, and provides rail services from downtown to Midway and O'Hare airports.

Downtown shopping and dining is strong, including Chicago's famous Marshall Field's department store. Just north of the Loop is the Magnificent Mile, a major shopping area based around Water Tower Place, 900 North Michigan, and Park Tower, all located within a block or two of the John Hancock Center.

Chicago has hot summers with July temperatures frequently over 30°C, but it is cold in January when it is rarely above freezing.
