The headquarters of Tesco are currently in Cheshunt and Debenhams and Lotus Cars were founded in the city. The main shopping area, the Brookfield Centre, was opened in the 1980s. It houses shops including Marks and Spencer, Argos, Next and Boots.

The most famous former resident of the town is Sir Cliff Richard.
