About Canberra
Canberra is the capital of Australia and with a population of over 332,000. The city is 300km (3 hours drive) southwest of Sydney, and 650km (7hours) north-east of Melbourne. It is unusual among Australian cities as an entirely purpose-built, planned city. The city's incorporates significant areas of natural vegetation that have earned Canberra the title "bush capital", so it is not ideal for walking around.
The Molonglo River flows through Canberra and has been dammed to form the body of water in the centre of the city called Lake Burley Griffin. Canberra is the site of numerous government departments and agencies and at the centre is Parliament House, a fascinating building well worth a visit. Axial roads run from the Parliament to other major buildings, national museums and galleries, many of which are modern and of high quality.
The urban areas of Canberra are organised into a hierarchy of districts, town centres, group centres and local suburbs. Most suburbs have a town centre which is the focus of commercial and social activities.
Canberra is not noted for its nightlife but the city centre, or 'Civic' as it is known locally, has the large Canberra Centre shopping mall. Garema Place and City Walk are open areas for pedestrians with many outdoor cafes.
Canberra Airport has no international flights. It is located near the semi-rural suburb of Pialligo about 10 minutes drive from the city centre. Canberra Railway Station is in the southern suburb of Kingston and trains run to Sydney and Melbourne.
