Bucharest is the capital of Romania and its largest city. It lies in the south west of the country on the banks of the Dâmbovita River.

The city was first mentioned as the ‘Citadel of Buchresti’ in 1459 and became a residence of the Wallachian prince Vlad III the Impaler. The city’s melange of architectural styles hints at the transformations it’s undergone since then: the suburbs are lined with grey housing blocks built during Ceausescu’s reign, but there are also remains of medieval churches and courts, baroque palaces and modern office buildings. The city is even home to the world’s second largest building, the Palace of Parliament – a breathtaking work of Communist folly.
