About Brisbane

Named in honour of Sir Thomas Brisbane in 1825, the original settlement grew from a harsh penal colony established on the location of the Brisbane CBD, and free settlers were permitted from 1842. Brisbane hosted the 1982 Commonwealth Games and 1988 World's Fair.

The city straddles the Brisbane River, and its eastern suburbs line the shores of Moreton Bay. The city centre is situated in a curve of the Brisbane River. Covering only 2.2 square kilometres, it is easily walkable. The streets are named after members of the House of Hanover, so streets named after female members such as Adelaide, Alice, Ann, Charlotte, Elizabeth, Margaret and Mary run parallel to Queen Street, and perpendicular streets are named after male members, such as Albert, Edward, George and William.

The Queen Street Mall was pedestrianised in 1992 and is lined with retail outlets and other malls including the Wintergarden, Broadway on the Mall, Queens Plaza, Brisbane Arcade and The Myer Centre.

Brisbane Airport is at Eagle Farm to the north east of the city and is accessible by road using the Gateway Motorway. Rail services using Airtrain link to the area's commuter system.
