About Boston
Founded in 1630, Boston is the largest city in New England and has become one of the oldest and most culturally significant cities in the United States. Boston was the location of several major events during the American Revolution, and was a major shipping port and manufacturing centre. Today, the city is home to Harvard University and MIT, and its economy is based on research, finance, and biotechnology.
Downtown Boston's streets follow an irregular pattern and roads change names and lose and add lanes seemingly at random. Boston has been described as a "City of Squares", referring to the tradition of naming the intersections of major thoroughfares after prominent city residents. But the metro, bus and water shuttles are very good for getting around the city.
The Esplanade park on the banks of the Charles River is a relaxing spot close to the city centre, with the river used for sailing and rowing. Boston Common, located near the Financial District and Beacon Hill, is the oldest public park in the U.S.
The MBTA's Silver Line service connects South Station, a major transportation hub in the downtown Boston financial district, with all Logan International Airport terminals. There is also an Airport stop on the MBTA's Blue Line subway service.
