About Barcelona

Barcelona is the second largest city in Spain after the capital Madrid. It is located on the Mediterranean coast between the mouths of the rivers Llobregat and Besos and is bounded to the west by the Serra de Collserola ridge.

The main international airport, El Prat De Llobregat, is just 3km from Barcelona centre although there are many low cost airlines that fly to airports much further away from the city.

Barcelona has mild, dry winters and warm, humid summers. The weather is always good for alfresco dining, strolling down the famous Rambla de Catalunya, or visiting the 68 parks, especially the remarkable Park Guell designed by the famous local architect Antoni Gaudi. He also designed the immense but still unfinished church of the Sagrada Familia, which has been under construction since 1882. Completion is planned for 2026.

There are excellent shops and restaurants throughout central Barcelona, known as The Barri Gotic. With a labyrinthine street plan, many small streets open out into squares. Most of the quarter is closed to regular traffic although open to service vehicles and taxis. The upper half of the Avinguda Diagonal is the main commercial area of the city with several skyscrapers. For evening dining there are many waterfront restaurants by the Olympic Village.

The city is known for being football mad and the famous Nou Camp stadium of FC Barcelona is a major attraction. To the north of the city is the Circuit de Catalunya, home of the Spanish F1 Grand Prix since 1991.

Roughly 30 minutes drive from Barcelona, separated by the Collserola Natural Park, is the Parc Tecnologic del Valles which houses universities and technological services. The area has railway, airport and port facilities, as well as a tunnel connection to Barcelona, and motorway links with the whole of Spain and the rest of Europe. Business based there include technologies associated with agriculture, biology and bio-technology, IT and telecommunications, environmental technologies, energy technology, and chemical engineering.

Drawing upon its tradition of creative art and craftsmanship, Barcelona is known for its award-winning industrial design. It also has several congress halls, notably Fira de Barcelona (Trade Fair), that host a quickly growing number of national and international events each year.
