About Aylesbury

Aylesbury lies in the county town of Buckinghamshire in South West England. The town’s population has doubled since the 1960s due to new housing developments. However, Aylesbury saw substantial areas in its centre demolished in the 1950s and 1960s when 16th-18thcentury houses were pulled down to make way for commercial developments, despite many of these houses being in good condition.

Among the pubs and bars in Aylesbury, The Hop Pole on the Bicester Road has been voted one of the top 20 pubs in the UK.  For those who enjoy the outdoors, the Conservation Area around St. Mary’s church and Queens Park are amongst some of the most popular areas of the town.

In 2001 the town won funding of £1million to be one of six cycling demonstration towns in England, which was match-funded by Buckinghamshire County Council. This has benefitted the town as it has provided facilities for cyclists, such as bike lockers, bike stands as well as tiger and toucan road crossings.

Aylesbury is internationally renowned for the award winning Roald Dahl Children’s Gallery, and the world famous Stoke Mandeville Hospital and Guttemann Sports Centre. The town is filled with historic stories, Henry VIII allegedly wooed Anne Boleyn at the King’s Head, Roald Dahl invented his classic books in the Aylesbury area, and his imagination is now celebrated in the town’s County Museum. In the cobbled market square, stands the imposing figure of John Hampden, a local hero and key figure in the defeat of the Royalists in the English Civil War.

Aylesbury is served by the A41, which runs from London to Birkenhead. The A413 and A418 roads also run through the town.
