About Andover

Andover is a town in Essex County, Massachusetts. It lies four miles south of Lawrence, the nearest city, and around 22 miles north of Boston. The Merrimack River constitutes half of the town’s northern border.

The first permanent settlement in the area was established in 1641 by John Woodbridge and a group of settlers from Newbury and Ipswich. The town lies in the New England area and during the witch trials at nearby Salem in 1692, 40 Andover residents were formally accused. 

Later on, the town was home to many supporters of the anti-slavery movement, even before the American Civil War began, including Harriet Beecher Stowe, author of Uncle Tom’s Cabin. In the late 18th century the town became a centre for the manufacture of powder, paper and wool. Today, among its 10 largest commercial or industrial employers are Philips Electronics, Compaq and Gillette.
