About Aix en Provence
Aix en Provence is a small, classically Provençal town. It is a quiet and clean town and is wealthier than some of its neighbouring cities, such as Marseille. There are three universities and several French-language schools for international students which means there is a strong student presence in the city.
The city centre is mostly pedestrian. Its small size means that it is easy to get around by foot - you can cross the centre in 15 minutes. This makes it easy to explore the city and to get a real feel for the culture and lifestyle of the people who live there. Aix en Provence has a lot of restaurants for a small town and visitors certainly won’t be stuck for choice, whether they want to spend a little or a lot. Most of the restaurants are in the small area of the old city, between Place des Cardeurs and Cours Mirabeau. The restaurants and bars tend to be more expensive along Cours Mirabeau, the city’s main avenue.
Aix en Provence is famous for its fountains. The largest and most famous fountain is on the Cours Mirabeau. As well as the many fountains dotted around the city, Aix is known for its architecture, which often features varied, intricate doors and bell towers. The city also has a market that runs several days a week. The largest markets are on a Saturday with the flower market at Place de l’Hotel de Ville and the main food market at Place Richelme.
