Situated on the edge of the rolling Surrey hills yet within easy access of London, the borough's rich heritage was first mentioned in the Domesday Book, and then regularly over the centuries by leading chroniclers such as Pepys and Dickens. It is best known for the Epsom Downs racecourse which hosts the Epsom Derby, the UK's premier thoroughbred horse race for three-year-old colts and fillies.
The Ashley Shopping Centre was built in the early 1980s and subsequently parts of the high street were pedestrianised as part of the construction of the town's large one-way system.
Epsom Playhouse features a varied programme of events, featuring both professional and amateur productions. The main auditorium seats 400 and plays host to theatre companies and classical concerts. The Playhouse also stages many West End productions and holds a regular film season.
Epsom railway station has frequent rail services to London (running to Waterloo, Victoria and London Bridge), and also to Guildford, Croydon and Wimbledon where it connects with the London Underground and Tramlink. Two other railway lines were built to serve the Epsom Downs Racecourse, with termini at Epsom Downs and Tattenham Corner.
